Gerard SUTTON

Professor Gerard Sutton is as an Australian ophthalmologist with expertise in cataract, refractive and corneal surgery.  He completed his training at Sydney Eye Hospital with fellowships at St Thomas and Moorfield’s Hospital in London and the Friedrich Alexander University in Germany. He has held academic positions as Associate Professor at Auckland University, Visiting Professor to the University of Mandalay in Myanmar and the Douglas & Lola Douglas Chair of Ophthalmology at the University of Sydney. He is the current co-President of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery and previous leadership positions include President of the ANZ Cornea Society, Medical Director of the NSW Eye & Tissue Bank, Council of the Asia Cornea Society and Director of the Myanmar Corneal & Eye Bank Programme.  Previous grants and awards include the Sydney Research Big Idea Award, the XOVA Award for International Excellence in Ophthalmology, the John Parr Medal, the Doug Coster Medal and the Lions International Centennial Medal. His main research focus is now corneal bioengineering and in 2023 he co-founded BIENCO having received the largest eye research grant in Australia’s history. He has published over 140 peer-reviewed papers with an H Index of 29 (Scopus) and has received over $40M in competitive grants. He lives in Sydney with his wife Gina and dog Lulu. In any free time he can be found fly fishing, ocean swimming or needlessly involved in self-flagellation on the golf course.
