2025 APACRS LIM LECTURE

Thomas KOHNEN

Germany

The APACRS LIM Lecture is the highest award of the society. Since 1991, outstanding ophthalmologists who have made extraordinary contributions to the development of cataract and refractive surgery have been invited to deliver this lecture at the annual meeting of the APACRS.

Prof Thomas KOHNEN will be delivering the 2025 APACRS LIM Lecture titled Bridging Laser and Lens Extraction – The evolution of phakic IOLs.

Phakic IOLs (PIOL) were developed in the 1970/80 and appeared on the market as iris-fixated (Worst/Fechner, 1986), anterior chamber angle-supported (Baikoff, 1987) and ciliary sulcus fixated (Fyodorov, 1993) options. A tremendous growth of myopia and presbyopia has been noticed by surgeons worldwide. PIOLs were then necessitated as a method to correct high myopia, later astigmatism and more recently to lower refractive errors. Presbyopia correction is among the latest applications of PIOLs. In ciliary sulcus fixated IOL, sizing is a particularly important part of IOL calculation. Prof Thomas Kohnen will share his experience with 3,000 PIOLs of all types he has implanted and explanted and will also provide peer-reviewed data over the last 20 years.
